Our story
The William L. Silver Jr. Scholarship was established in 2023 to honor the lifelong service and educational leadership of William “Bill” Silver. As support and community interest continued to grow, efforts began to formally establish The Silver Foundation in 2026 with the vision of expanding educational opportunity, leadership development, and community investment for future generations.
Rooted in the values that defined Mr. Silver’s life, integrity, service, leadership, and commitment to students, the Foundation seeks to create meaningful opportunities that positively impact individuals, schools, and communities for years to come.
The Legacy of William “Bill” Silver
The Legacy of William “Bill” Silver
William “Bill” Silver dedicated his life to strengthening the Saraland community through education, leadership, and public service. As President of the Saraland City School System Board of Education from the system’s founding in 2006 until his passing in 2023, he helped guide the growth of one of Alabama’s most respected school systems while consistently prioritizing the success and well-being of students.
Beyond education, Mr. Silver spent decades serving his community through civic organizations, youth athletics, mentorship, and public leadership. In recognition of his many contributions to the community, he was named Saraland Citizen of the Year in 1990.
Known to many as “Coach Bill,” he believed leadership was rooted in service, relationships, accountability, and investment in future generations. His vision, work ethic, and unwavering commitment to students helped shape what is recognized today as The Spartan Standard.
The Silver Foundation was created to continue that legacy by supporting educational opportunity, encouraging leadership and civic responsibility, and investing in the success of future generations.

The Silver Foundation is currently in the process of formal nonprofit organization and long-term operational development. Scholarship opportunities, partnerships, fundraising efforts, and community initiatives will continue to expand as the Foundation grows.
